Beneficiaries

In the event of your passing, it’s important that you designate a beneficiary for your final paycheck and Life Insurance benefits. These are separate actions you need to take. Just because you have named beneficiaries for Basic and/or Supplemental Life Insurance does not mean that it is carried over to your final pay and vice versa.

How to designate beneficiaries:

  • Log in to OnceConnect Oracle using your Shelby County login credentials.
  • Click on Home > Me > Benefits.
  • On the right hand side, click on “Change Beneficiaries.”
  • You’ll see a drop down for Final Pay, Basic Life, and Supplemental Life.
  • You’ll need to designate a beneficiary for each one. (If you’re not enrolled in Supplemental Life, you do not need to complete that section.)
  • Be sure to save all your changes.

Differences in Life Insurance beneficiaries

  • Primary beneficiaries are the ones who are first in line to receive the life insurance payout when you pass away. Naming at least one primary beneficiary is required in the system.
  • Contingent beneficiaries are optional backup beneficiaries. They only receive the benefit if the primary beneficiary is unable to.

You can name more than one beneficiary and assign percentages, but the total across all beneficiaries must equal 100%—never more.
